Lobes of the brain and Mental Status Exam

Frontal lobes

Functions: E-MBA— executive function + motivation + working memory +  behavior + attention 

Tests: Working memory (digital span +  serial 7 +  spelling WORLD backward) +  judgement + fund of knowledge + set generation (naming list of things in certain category) + task organization

 

Temporal lobes

Functions: emotional response (amygdala), memory (hippocampus)– recent/new

Tests: declarative meomory

 

Language

Dominant side

Left for R-handed person.

Wernike’s: posterior superior temporal gyrus: receptive language

aphasia: cannot follow commands.

Broca’s: posterior inferior frontal gyrus: expressive language

aphasia: speech non-fluent + telegraphic + minimal

Non-dominant

Homologous regions to the dominant side: non-verbal language + emotional aspects + prosody (rhythm)


Somatosensory: Parietal lobes

Non-dominant: visio-spatial relationship

Dominant: praxis

Gerstmann syndrom: inferior parietal damage

Acalculia finger agnosia + R/L confusion agraphia(inability to write & spell) 

Autopagnosia: inability to localize own or another’s body parts. Left posterior parietal lobe lesion.

Cannot calculate + cannot write

Astereognosia: inability to recognize objects placed in hand w/ eyes closed.

Tests: agnosia + apraxia (cannot perform a purposeful motor act on command) + constructional apraxia

 

Visual: Occipital lobes

Connections to visual association cortex (inferior temporal): color +shape + face recognitions

Prospagnosia: inability to recognize familiar faces. Bilateral occipitotemporal lesion.

Visual agnosia: cannot name colors or objects.

Connections to superior temporal-parietal area: motion perception

Tests: visual fields + naming (objects, colors) + face recognition
